Match Numbers to Roles and Arithmetic Clues

A number is not useful until you know what it represents. Learn to match candidates to years, months, days, ages, sums, differences, products, and quotients—then audit every clue.

A blank has a role, not just a number

Before calculating, ask what kind of quantity belongs in each blank.

Important: A range only tells you what is possible. It does not always prove the final role. For example, 3 could be a month or a day until other clues are used.

76 is too large for a month or day, so it fills the age role.

Then use what remains

After the year and age roles are filled, the remaining 3 and 18 must fill month and day.

Because 18 cannot be a month, month = 3 and day = 18.
