Why does 0.8 × 1.25 equal 1?
This pair is less obvious. Explore two explanations, then complete the mini-check.
So the product is also 10 times smaller: 10 ÷ 10 = 1.
Decimals can also be written as fractions:
Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators: (4 × 5) ÷ (5 × 4) = 20 ÷ 20 = 1. The fractions have the same two factors in the numerator and denominator.

Use this routine whenever several numbers are being multiplied.
Guided practice
For each problem, select two factors whose product is 1, 3, or 10. Multiply that pair first, then multiply by the remaining factor. Other groupings are valid, but this activity checks the friendly-number shortcut.

Game: Partner Hunt
Select two number cards and multiply their values. A match must have a product of 1, 3, or 10. Match all ten cards into five pairs; each card may be used only once.
Mistake detective
A student says: “0.8 × 1.25 = 10, because 8 × 125 = 1000.” What did the student forget?

Try all ten questions. For an equation containing □, enter the missing factor. For an expression without □, enter its product. Use friendly partners rather than long multiplication whenever possible.
Which one does not belong?
There can be more than one strong answer. The explanation matters more than choosing the same expression as someone else.
0.75 × 4 is different because it equals 3 while the other three equal 1.
0.8 × 1.25 is different because neither factor is a whole number.
0.5 × 2 is different because it uses the fewest decimal digits.
