What does the multiplication mean?

0.5 × 2 means “two copies of one half.”

Why does 0.8 × 1.25 equal 1?

1.25 × 8 = 10
Now make the factor 10 times smaller
8 ÷ 10 = 0.8

So the product is also 10 times smaller: 10 ÷ 10 = 1.

1.25 × 0.8 = 1

Decimals can also be written as fractions:

0.8 = 45 and 1.25 = 54
45 × 54 = 1

Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators: (4 × 5) ÷ (5 × 4) = 20 ÷ 20 = 1. The fractions have the same two factors in the numerator and denominator.
